How to Make the Best Sautéed Cabbage – Quick, Flavorful & Healthy Side Dish

Sautéed cabbage is one of the easiest and most delicious ways to enjoy this budget-friendly vegetable. Perfect as a side dish or a light meal on its own, this recipe brings out the natural sweetness of cabbage while adding a savory kick from garlic, butter, and red pepper flakes. In just a few steps, you’ll have a dish that’s both satisfying and healthy.

Why Sautéed Cabbage is the Perfect Side Dish

Cabbage is packed with nutrients like fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin K. When sautéed with aromatics like onion and garlic and finished with a touch of butter and bouillon, it transforms into a rich, comforting side that pairs perfectly with grilled meats, rice, or even as a topping for noodles.

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups cabbage, shredded
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and grated
  • 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp chicken bouillon powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Start with the Base
Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the sliced onion and cook until it begins to brown slightly, about 3 minutes.
  2. Add Garlic and Cabbage
Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute, making sure not to burn it. Add the shredded cabbage and continue sautéing for about 3 minutes, stirring often.
  3. Incorporate the Rest
Add the grated carrots, red pepper flakes, chicken bouillon, salt, and pepper. Cook everything together for another 3-5 minutes until the cabbage is tender but still has a slight bite.
  4. Serve
Remove from heat and serve warm as a side dish or light main course.
