To make this dish, you will need;

Ingredients

  • 1 cup uncooked rice. I use long-grain basmati
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 450g ground beef
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk (optional)
  • 1 cup diced bell pepper (mixed)
  • 2 medium red chillies, halved, (optional)
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • Salt to taste

How to make Dirty Rice

  1. First, you will add the oil and ground beef to a large pan over medium heat then cook until browned
  2. Next, add the minced garlic and ginger and continue to cook
  3. You will then add the chopped onions, red chilli, and spices and stir well to combine
  4. Add the bell peppers and mix well. Remove and set aside on a plate
  5. In the same pot, add water, coconut milk (if using) and butter and bring to a boil. Add the rice
  6. Reduce heat to the lowest setting, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Return cooked meat to the pot and gently mix to incorporate. Cover and simmer for an additional 10 minutes
  8. Fluff rice with a fork and garnish with chopped scallions (optional).
