Yields: 2 servings Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 5-7 minutes (plus steak resting time)

Ingredients

Ingredients for Steak Caesar Salad

For Caesar Salad Dressing

  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp powdered erythritol/monk fruit (or more to taste)

For Steak

  • 1.5 lbs boneless prime rib steaks
  • 2 tsp salt (1/2 tsp per steak)
  • 3 tbsp olive oil

For Salad

  • 1 head romaine lettuce, torn/chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, cut into half
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 medium English cucumber, diced
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 large avocado, ripe
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice, fresh, to serve

Step by Step Instructions

Prepare the Steak for Marinating First, pat your boneless prime rib steaks dry. Evenly coat both sides of the steak with 2 teaspoons of salt and black pepper. Set the seasoned steaks aside to marinate for at least 20 minutes. This allows the flavors to penetrate the meat and tenderize it slightly.

Mix the Caesar Dressing While the steak is marinating, prepare your Caesar salad dressing. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the minced garlic, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, and powdered erythritol/monk fruit. Mix these dressing ingredients well until they are thoroughly combined and smooth. Keep this aside.

Assemble the Salad Base In a large bowl, combine the salad ingredients, excluding the avocado. This includes the torn romaine lettuce, halved cherry tomatoes, diced English cucumber, sliced red bell pepper, and thinly sliced onion. Toss the dressing into this mix, ensuring the vegetables are evenly coated. Reserve some of the dressing to top off the finished salad later.

Cook the Steak Heat a nonstick pan over high heat and drizzle 3 tablespoons of olive oil into it. Once the oil is hot and shimmering, carefully add the steak. Cook for about 2 minutes undisturbed to get a good sear. Then, flip the steak and let it cook for another 3-5 minutes, depending on your preferred level of doneness. Adjust cooking time for thicker or thinner cuts.

Rest and Slice the Steak Once the steak is cooked to your liking, transfer it to a chopping board. Let it rest for at least 5 minutes. This resting period is crucial, as it allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more tender and flavorful steak. Finally, thinly slice the steak across the grain. This method helps to break up the muscle fibers, ensuring each bite is tender.

Final Assembly and Serve Arrange the dressed salad onto serving plates. Place the thinly sliced steak beautifully on top of the salad. Lastly, slice the ripe avocado and arrange it onto the same plate. Drizzle fresh lemon juice over the avocado, which adds brightness and helps prevent browning. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious, hearty Steak Caesar Salad!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the best cut of steak to use for this Caesar salad?

Boneless prime rib is used in this recipe for its tenderness and rich marbling but sirloin or ribeye are also excellent choices. The key is selecting a cut that cooks quickly over high heat while staying juicy and flavorful.

2. Can I substitute the mayonnaise in the Caesar dressing?

Yes, Greek yogurt is a lighter alternative that still gives the dressing a creamy consistency with a slight tang. You can also utilize a store bought Caesar dressing if you’re short on time, though the homemade version adds much better depth of flavor.

3. Why is it important to slice the steak across the grain?

Cutting against the grain shortens the muscle fibers in the meat, which makes each slice significantly more tender and easier to chew. Slicing with the grain instead results in tougher, chewier pieces even if the steak is perfectly cooked.

4. Can I make this salad before time for meal prep?

The steak and dressing can be made in advance and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. However, it’s best to assemble the salad fresh just before serving, as the romaine and avocado lose their texture and color quickly once dressed.

5. Is this steak Caesar salad suitable for a low carb or keto diet?

Yes, with only 17g of carbohydrates and 8g of fiber per serving, this salad fits well within a low-carb or keto eating plan. The use of erythritol or monk fruit as a sweetener in the dressing also keeps the sugar content minimal.

About Devine Dishes A lifelong love of cooking, one delicious recipe at a time. Welcome to Devine Dishes! I'm so glad you're here. I'm the cook, recipe creator, and food lover behind this little corner of the internet. Born and raised in Kenya, my love for cooking started when I was very young. Even as a child, I would happily volunteer to cook for the family, leaving the dishes and laundry for my siblings. Looking back, I think I had already discovered my passion and a clever way to avoid some chores! 😜 Where My Love for Cooking Began In high school, I chose Home Science and quickly discovered that baking was something I truly enjoyed. I went on to win awards in provincial school baking competitions for three consecutive years. Those were incredibly proud moments for me, and I loved the feeling of creating something delicious with my own hands. But not everyone saw cooking the way I did. I still remember the day my chemistry teacher laughed out loud in class after I received one of my baking medals. He told me I was wasting my time with cooking and that I should focus on the sciences, which would give me a better future than cookies and cakes. It was an embarrassing moment, especially as a student who was proud of something she had worked hard to achieve. But I didn't stop cooking. That experience stayed with me, not because it changed my passion, but because it reminded me that sometimes you have to believe in yourself even when others don't understand your dreams. From Cooking for Family to Building a Food Business Over the years, my love for cooking has taken me on quite a journey. I've explored different food business ideas, from cooking and selling chapatis and mandazis to catering, meal preparation, and delivery. Each experience taught me something new about food, business, and the joy of sharing a good meal with others. Today, I'm excited to bring that passion to food blogging. Devine Dishes is a place where I share the recipes I love, the ones I'm learning, and the ones I can't wait for you to try. You'll find African and Kenyan favorites, comforting family meals, delicious baking recipes, and practical dishes that make cooking at home enjoyable. My goal is simple: to help you discover recipes that are delicious, approachable, and worth making again. More Than Just Recipes For me, food has always been about more than feeding people. It's about family, memories, creativity, and bringing people together. When I'm not working, you'll often find me trying out new recipes, creating and editing content, or spending time with family. Sometimes we're swimming, watching TV, or simply chatting over a good meal. Those ordinary moments are some of my favorite moments. I also love traveling and discovering new places, cultures, and foods. I'm hoping to do much more of it in the near future, and I'm excited about the inspiration those experiences will bring to my cooking and future recipes. Thank You for Being Here Whether you're visiting Devine Dishes for a Kenyan recipe, looking for something delicious to bake, or simply exploring new meals to try, thank you for being part of this journey. Every recipe shared here is a little piece of my love for cooking, my experiences, and the belief that it's never too late to pursue something you're passionate about. I hope you find something delicious, make wonderful memories around your table, and come back often. Happy cooking! With love, Milli The heart behind Devine Dishes
