Egg in a Whole Recipe

Egg in a Hole Recipe

Egg in a hole is a classic breakfast made by frying an egg directly inside a hole cut into buttered toast, giving you crisp bread and a runny yolk in every bite. Ready in under 10 minutes with just three ingredients, it can be made on the stovetop, in the air fryer or baked in the oven for a crowd.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of 100% whole-wheat bread
  • 2 tsp unsalted butter at room temperature
  • Cooking spray
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 (¾-oz) provolone cheese slice
  • 1 tomato cut crosswise into 4 slices
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper freshly ground

Instructions

  • Cut a hole in the center of each slice of bread. Reserve the centers of the bread for another use such as breadcrumbs or in the same pan.
  • Spread ½ teaspoon of butter on each of the slices of bread.
  • Coat cooking spray on a nonstick skillet and add more butter and heat over medium-high heat. When the cooking spray starts shimmering, place the bread (buttered-side up) in the skillet.
  • Crack 1 egg and gently pour the egg into the center hole of the bread then season with salt and pepper. Repeat with the 3 remaining eggs and bread.
  • Cook for 3 minutes until the eggs are set, and carefully flip over each piece.
  • Gently place 1 slice of cheese (if using) and the tomato slice onto the egg, and continue cooking for 2 minutes until the eggs are cooked to desired consistency, and the cheese has slightly melted.
  • Serve immediately.
